Sabine Remy is a German analogue collage artist. Collages are the perfect medium for her. She loves how accidentally and unpredictable they are. Even if she has a fundamental concept in her mind it always depends on the material that is available. She likes cutting and pasting elements taken from vintage paper material from the 1950s and earlier because they are often a little bizarre and moreover very colourful and – especially – full of lived life. I have always been fascinated by the nature of collage, whether it is digital or the use of real material, all the joy of collage is hidden in extracting new meanings through a combination of different elements and/or by juxtaposing them. Collage allows artists to find creative ways of expression and a massive volume of different material, even if done in the digital domain with all the virtual materials. On the other hand, collage is one of the most effective ways of storytelling, by assembling different elements and materials, artists can convey emotions and narratives in a visually distinctive manner. I was able to find all these different qualities in the work of Sabine Remy. beautifully crafted images with unprecedented elements entwined together and creating a world of fantastic characters and in some cases archetypes. I have had a lot of inspiration from her work in relation to my own personal practice.
