Imaginarium

Photographic interpretations of supernatural characters from Persian folktales and myths.

A Brief DescriptionPersian culture is saturated with many fairy tales and mythical characters which have deep roots in history and religion. These characters have multiple origins; some emerged from religious transcripts while others are based on folklore and traditional stories. Regardless of where they come from, they have one mission in common; to interact with humans’ consciousness.

In every oral tradition, words are the storyteller’s means to evoke the listener’s emotions and imagination to create a personal interpretation of the events and stories in the audience’s mind. This is a cultural endeavour for preserving archetypes, historical moments and even moral education in the form of stores and amusement. Imaginarium is a visual approach to the storyteller-listener experience and depicts the visual representation of Iranian mythical and imaginary characters.

Utilising staged photography, computer-generated imaging and digital composition, this project creates visually distinctive narratives to portray the intimate or uncanny relationship between humans and supernatural entities. Each image is a distillation of a story and uses symbolism, metaphors and components of popular stories to represent an imaginary realm. Synthesising elements of reality and unreality creates a unique hyper-realistic world where humans and non-humans interact, live and co-exist together.
