The Interview

On entering the world of colour grading

Kali Bateman:
Hootan, your career spans over a decade and includes a significant number of high-end productions. How did your journey into colour grading begin?

Hootan Haghshenas:
My journey started broadly in post-production, where I explored different disciplines before gravitating towards colour grading. What drew me in was the unique position it holds in the filmmaking process.

Colour grading is where everything converges — narrative, cinematography, and performance. It’s the final stage where you can shape how the audience experiences the story. That combination of technical precision and emotional impact is what made me commit to this path.

Over time, I specialised in colour science, advanced workflows, and finishing, working on increasingly complex and large-scale projects.

On colour as a storytelling language

Kali Bateman:
You often emphasise the emotional role of colour. How does that translate into your work?

Hootan:
Colour grading is fundamentally about storytelling.

Every decision — whether it’s contrast, tonal balance, or colour palette — affects how the audience feels. You can subtly guide perception, create atmosphere, or reinforce narrative themes without altering the content itself.

When done properly, colour grading becomes invisible. The audience doesn’t notice the grade, but they feel its impact throughout the film.

On international experience and global collaboration

Kali Bateman:
You’ve worked across different countries and industries. How has that influenced your perspective?

Hootan:
Working internationally has been essential to my development.

Each production brings a different visual language and cultural context. Collaborating with directors and cinematographers from diverse backgrounds teaches you how to adapt while maintaining a consistent standard.

It also strengthens your ability to communicate visually, which is critical in post-production, especially when working across borders and workflows.

On working at scale and complexity

Kali Bateman:
You’ve been involved in large-scale productions, including VFX-heavy projects. What challenges come with that level of work?

Hootan:
High-end productions require a deep understanding of both creative intent and technical pipelines.

You’re often dealing with complex conforms, multiple deliverables, HDR and SDR workflows, and integration with VFX. Precision is critical, but at the same time, you cannot lose sight of the storytelling.

My role is to ensure that all of these elements come together seamlessly while preserving the creative vision.

On process and creative leadership

Kali Bateman:
What defines your approach when starting a new project?

Hootan:
It always starts with understanding the director’s vision.

Before touching any tools, I focus on the emotional and narrative direction of the project. What should the audience feel? What is the visual identity of the story?

From there, I build a consistent visual language that supports the narrative across the entire piece. In many ways, the role also involves creative leadership — guiding the visual outcome while respecting the collaborative process.

On technology and evolving workflows

Kali Bateman:
With rapid advancements in post-production tools, how do you see the role of the colourist evolving?

Hootan:
Technology is evolving very quickly, which is both exciting and challenging.

However, tools are not what define a colourist. The fundamentals — understanding light, colour, and storytelling — remain constant.

My focus has always been on combining technical knowledge with artistic judgement. That balance is what allows you to adapt to any tool or workflow.

On contribution to the industry

Kali Bateman:
Beyond your professional work, you’ve been involved in mentoring and workshops. Why is that important to you?

Hootan:
I believe knowledge should be shared.

The industry grows when experienced professionals support emerging talent. Through workshops and mentoring, I aim to bridge the gap between technical skills and real-world professional workflows.

It’s also about raising the overall standard of post-production, particularly in places like Australia, where there is strong potential for growth.

On advice for emerging professionals

Kali Bateman:
What advice would you give to those entering the field today?

Hootan:
Focus on storytelling first.

It’s easy to become overly focused on software, but tools will always change. What defines your work is your understanding of narrative, light, and emotion.

Also, be patient. Building a career at a high level takes time, consistency, and collaboration.
